Rejection can be one of the most painful experiences in our lives, as it can provoke a cascade of emotional turmoil, including feelings of inadequacy, loss of identity, and lack of purpose. Fear of being ridiculed or belittled is common, as these experiences can reinforce feelings of worthlessness and inferiority. However, humans are social creatures who crave connection and belonging, and this desire for acceptance can drive people to engage in harmful behaviours, such as substance abuse or engaging in relationships where love is absent. This desire for acceptance can also influence choices in areas such as clothing, cars, houses, education, and career paths.
When dealing with humans, acceptance is typically earned rather than given. Unfortunately, a person may not grant acceptance, even after efforts have been made to earn it. For example, a husband may no longer accept his wife simply because she has lost her youthful beauty; a wife may withhold her support for a husband who has lost his job; a boss may stop providing recommendations if you fail to meet a target; and a pastor may shun you if you are unable to contribute financially.
Similarly, we often feel that we need to earn God’s acceptance, which leads to a mindset of performance. However, this approach is not effective in our relationships with God.
God’s acceptance is a free gift that cannot be earned or achieved through action or accomplishment (Jer. 31:3; Rom 5:8). This is not contingent on what we have done or will do in the future. God accepts us unconditionally regardless of our shortcomings or failures, and it should not be misunderstood as a licence to do whatever we want. The prodigal son was accepted by his father, but his actions were not condoned (Luke 15:11-32). God’s acceptance provides us with an opportunity to correct mistakes and seek forgiveness at any time. Unlike humans, God does not reject us when we are flawed or fall short. His arms are wide open to receive us and cleanse us when needed. You can approach God with confidence, whether forgiveness, help, or guidance is needed. You can approach God with confidence, whether you need forgiveness, help, or guidance. Do not let others drive you crazy; some people may never accept you, but God does.
